Patrick Brealey

Shining a modern light on the roots of North American popular music, Patrick Brealey blends elements of folk, country, cabaret and blues to deliver lyrically driven songs with a uniquely powerful voice that hearkens to the crooners of early rock and roll. An accomplished pianist, agile vocalist and adept guitar picker, Brealey is a natural performer.

Patrick Brealey began his solo career in 2005 after touring internationally with indie-popsters The Salteens. Originally from Vancouver, Brealey fostered a dedicated following in his hometown with his trusty band The Knives, resulting in highly anticipated, sold out shows. With a move to Toronto in 2008, Brealey was warmly welcomed into the city’s vibrant country and roots scene and it wasn’t long before The Beauties, the house band of Toronto’s illustrious Dakota Tavern, were asking him onstage as a guest performer, along with the likes of Ron Sexsmith and Kathleen Edwards.

In the past year, Patrick performed multiple dates in New York City, southern Ontario and Western Canada with shows at Toronto’s NxNE Festival, Vancouver International Jazz Festival, as well as showcases at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Conference (OCFF) and Folk Alliance in Memphis. Recent opening spots include performances with Serena Ryder, Justin Rutledge, Old Man Luedecke and Luke Doucet.

His ability to engage an audience is a signature of Brealey’s live shows. Whether it’s through his clever songwriting, quick sense of humour or soul baring voice, he captivates crowds and moves them to laugh, cry and to join in — a testament to his belief that art is nothing without an audience.

The debut album, City Blood, Country Heart was released in May 2007. This full-length travels a rolling landscape between soul-touching ballads and theatrical rollicks in which listeners find themselves in a world where influences like Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello and Neko Case roam. The songs are home to a lyrical depth compared to the likes of Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen while Brealey’s delivery combines tongue-in-cheek humour with heartfelt honesty. City Blood, Country Heart creates a perfect soundtrack for weekend mornings, sunsets at the cabin or a long drive along a dirt road.

The forthcoming album from Patrick Brealey is titled Mercury in Songbirds and will be released on Boompa Records in the summer of 2009.
