Vancouver’s Boompa Records, in conjunction with the North By Northeast Music and Film Festival and with CBC’s Galaxie Music Network, are proud to announce that Toronto-based The Ladies and Gentlemen is the winner for the 5th annual Galaxie Rising Stars Award for 2005.
Despite the moniker, The Ladies and Gentlemen is actually the new solo project from Thomas D’Arcy (formerly of much-loved, much-missed melodic rockers The Carnations) who wrote, performed, and produced his debut album, Small Sins, on his own.
A sumptuous blend of upbeat pop and introspective lyrical themes, The Ladies and Gentlemen are now a full-fledged band and D’Arcy received a cheque for $3,000.00 on Friday night after his performance during NXNE at The Rivoli in Toronto.
The Galaxie Rising Stars Award is a tradition for NXNE that seeks to recognize emerging homegrown talent. The award is presented to one Canadian artist or band at NXNE who are thought to be the most likely to succeed amongst all domestic participants at the festival. A jury of knowledgeable music industry personalities selected by the directors of NXNE chose The Ladies and Gentlemen from hundreds of eligible performers.
Past honourees include Raising the Fawn and Matt Mays.
The Ladies and Gentlemen‘s debut Small Sins will be available in stores on July 12th, 2005.
