Woodpigeon: Best of 2012

We asked Mark Andrew Hamilton (aka Woodpigeon) about his top favourites for 2012, and he gave us a stellar response. Here’s what he had to say about this year’s bests:

MARK: I’m so not really into ranking things in any order, and my listening habits these years have gone more in reverse than forwards (for example, spending some heavy time early in the year listening my way through Leonard Cohen, old Bedhead and Arab Strap records that I loved to death when they came out ages ago, and re-discovering these sweet Smashing Pumpkins re-issues that make me feel like I’m in high school again) so here’s 5 albums and 5 songs I’ll remember from 2012 while forgetting at the moment dozens of others who also made the year special:

ALBUMS:
DIRTY PROJECTORS – Swing Lo Magellan (Domino)
KNOTS – White River of White Lies (Bart Cassette)
SHARON VAN ETTEN – Tramp (Jagjaguwar)
FIONA APPLE – The Idler Wheel … (Epic)
GRIZZLY BEAR – Shields (Warp)

SONGS:
SPIRITUALIZED – Hey Jane (Fat Possum)
BRAIDS – Peach Wedding (Kanine) [end of 2011, but still popped up a lot in 2012]
THE HIDDEN WORDS – Dis (self-released)
EVENING HYMNS – You and Jake (Shuffling Feet)
KENDRICK LAMAR – Backstreet Freestyle (Interscope)

And of all the shows I saw this year, the best was without a doubt:

THE DIRTY PROJECTORS Reykjavik Art Museum | Iceland Airwaves 2012 3 November 2012
– I forced Mr. Rob Calder to go to this show with me, along with a couple of Icelandic friends, and despite all three of them kind-of dragging their feet (granted, we had to walk through the last stages of Hurricane Sandy blowing over Reykjavik) I feel at least partially responsible for watching Calder’s head blow wide open as the Projectors did their thing up on-stage. (Of course, mine did too – what a show).
